ELGIN, IL – One woman was killed and three other people injured in a shooting Sunday outside an Elgin bar.
The incident occurred about 12:25 a.m. in a parking lot in the 500 block of South McLean Boulevard, according to a post on the Elgin Police Department’s Facebook page. The location has been identified by The Courier-News as D Hangout Bar and Grill at 550 S. McLean Blvd.
The name of the victim has not been released.
Officers arrived at the scene to find three injured women, who were taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, the release said. A fourth victim, a male, transported himself to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
One woman was declared dead at the hospital, and two other victims have been treated and released, the release said. The status of the fourth victim is unknown.
Police said the suspect was known to the victims but would not say if anyone is in custody.
Most people inside the D Hangout Bar and Grill did not know there had been a shooting outside, Armando Latigo said. He and his wife returned to the bar Sunday morning to retrieve their car.
Caution tape had been wrapped around cars on the south side of the parking lot, Latigo said. He was parked on the north side but he said he decided not to take any chances by removing his car.
He and his wife had been sitting at the bar as a band played, but said they were unaware of the shooting until they were ready to leave at 1:30 a.m. Patrons were being asked to leave via the back door.
“The bouncer ran to the front” at one point, he said, but he didn’t know why, Latigo said.
The victim in the case is the fourth person to be shot and killed in Elgin this year.
In April, Mark McDaniel, 26, and Raymond Dyson, 29, were killed during a drug-related shooting in an apartment complex parking lot in the first block of Longwood Place. Two people have been charged in those deaths. A month earlier, Decynthia Clements, 31, was killed in a police shooting on Interstate 90.
The location of the shooting is just one block away from the site of one of Elgin’s most notorious shootings. In 2001, two Elgin men were killed and 15 people injured at J.B’s. Pub, located at McLean Boulevard and Route 20. Luther Casteel was convicted of the murders of bartender Jeffrey Weides and patron Richard Bartlett.
J.B.’s was torn down in 2014.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 847-695-4195 or send a text to 847-411, and including ELGINPD at the beginning followed by the message or tip.
