ESPANOLA, N.M. – State Police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and three others injured near the Ohkay Owingeh Casino north of Espanola.

Police say the victims were found inside a car in the northbound lane of traffic on State Road 68 Thursday night.

Cameron Martinez, 18, died, and two women and another man were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.

Martinez had recently appeared in a campaign ad for New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham. On Friday afternoon, she said her “heart broke” when she heard the news.

“This unthinkable tragedy took place just as he began a new job at Los Alamos National Labs and while he was working hard for change in his community,” Lujan Grisham added. “He was a remarkable young man who touched countless lives and who will not be forgotten.”

Española Valley High School honored its alum with a prayer at midfield before its Friday night football game. The district’s superintendent, Bobbie Gutierrez, said the details of what happened Thursday night are murky.

“In New Mexico, we seem to have a lot of road rage,” Gutierrez said. “That seems to be a trend, and my understanding is this got started and had to do with another young man and a former friend or girlfriend. I’m not sure of the details.”

State Road 68 reopened around 11:30 a.m. following a brief closure as officers investigated. As of 1 p.m., no arrests have been made in the case.
